The heart of man is presented to us in Scripture as a theater that draws the attention of the holy angels and of the Lord himself. There a continual battle is being waged between the powers of hell and the powers of heaven; a battle that is nothing but the renewal of the great battle waged between these same forces in the internal and external life of our Lord Jesus Christ. In this battle he was made to be fully conqueror, and even we ourselves were in turn enabled to be more than conquerors in him who loved us. Thus we are either the slaves and agents of the spirit of darkness or the slaves, the blessed slaves and rich agents, of the Spirit of light and life.
